If you click the image to the left you will go to a response to the presentation by Mathew Milan, that contains the presentation slides with audio and numerous comments from readers beneath it.

From my point of view this was the most thought provoking of the presentations because it touches on elements of my design education, that of reflective practice. But it is really important because of the ramifications of Milan’s observations, and the ensuing discussions

The design process illustrated

Bizarre as it may seem, this strange sketch helped me maintain focus during my recent MA in Design Practice. The mental model was a way of remembering the core elements of my learning contract – which effectively are elements of professional development.

The full essay is posted here with insights to reflective practice in the design arena. Iterative design processes owe much to action research – its all explained here

Reflective practice - why is it important?

Basically the more we hear about user centred design the more I am drawn to Donald Schon’s book – Educating the Reflective Practitioner. In the book he outlines several studies where professionals exhibit highly skilled behaviour through an iterative application of their skill. By revisiting design problems and thinking in an almost sub-conscious state they come up with solutions.

Thinking on your feet has always been a mark of a good designer, not only in designing but when communicating that design to a client or in a pitch. But the revisiting of a problem in an iterative way not only is seen in the UCD cycle but also in Agile to some extent. I have posted a review in the essay section, the summary of which can be seen on Amazon here.
